Sardar Mahendra Singh was born to Late Basant Singh and Sardarni Jit Kaur on 12.03.1925. He had his initial education at home through local learned Sikh Gyani then Kampur High School, Nagaon Govt Boys School and Khalsa Higher Secondary School at Amritsar. Late Singh had high regard for education and had aptly served during 70s to 80s as honorary Secretary of Lanka High School and Lanka Mahavidyalaya. He was also the President of Rashtrabhasha School and Krishna Bora B. Ed College. He was also the Vice President of Sadou Asom Sahitya Parisad. He was the president of Lanka Gurdwara for two terms and thereafter served as advisor till his demise. The popularity of Late Singh was glaringly visible on his demise when people from all walks of life joined in his last rites by joining the procession and also paid their homage in all the educational institutions and religious places of the town. His contribution to the society in the field of education, brotherhood and spirituality is remembered by all sects of people of the town.
